Classes

Classes and Workshops  – (November 2023:  At this time, the classes below are not my priority. Please contact me if interested in any of these experiences and we can see if scheduling on a future date will be mutually beneficial.  Appropriate for groups or as an addition to your organization’s programming schedule.)

Shorter Classes (1.5-2 hours):

  • Honey Tending:  Basic Book-keeping for Health Practitioners, Teachers, Consultants and Small Business Owners
    • Money is a complicated beast – both a necessity of modern life and the cause of a lot of pain and anxiety.  This course is intended to give you an introduction to basic book-keeping skills including setting up your Chart of Accounts, templates, items, tracking costs, invoicing customers, paying vendors, basic reporting and a bit more.  This is a 1.5-2 hour prerecorded webinar that also gives you access to live 1 hour calls monthly for 6 months.
  • Culinary Herbs Used Medicinally
    • So many culinary herbs also have medicinal properties.  This class will teach you practical tips to incorporate more “medicine” into your food through the use of herbs, how cultivating your own culinary herbs is an easy way to up-level your diet and why all this is important.  Participants will get to sample some unique preparations and will leave with recipes and resources for further experimentation at home.
  • Self Care for Activists, Organizers, Visionaries and Rabble Rousers
    • This class is aimed at teaching practicable, low-cost, self-care techniques for busy people.
  • Understanding (Chronic) Stress –
    • This class looks at the stress response, its impacts on the body and what we can do to mitigate the damage caused by chronic stress.  There is a significant amount of time spent on tools for building resiliency.

Longer Classes (2-6 hours):

  • Fermentation 101
    • This is a hands-on class that will cover the basics of Fermentation;  kimchi, kraut, dosas/idlis, kombucha, pickles.  Participants will leave with recipes and a sample jar of fermented vegetables.
  • Cooking From Your (Permaculture) Garden –
    • This hands-on class is designed to teach you (or your students if you have a permaculture institute or farm) creative ways to transform the abundance of your perma(nent agri)culture farm into delicious goodies.  Includes lunch and plenty of student participation.
  • Deep Nutrition –
    • This class is a heady, but inspiring delve into the idea of Deep Nutrition, a term I first heard from Cate Shanahan in her book by the same name.  We will discuss different forms of nourishment, from foods of varying qualities to our connection with the land and many points in between.  There will be some tastings, experiential learning and plenty of student involvement.
  • In Situ: Healing in Place –
    • Using archaeological methods and data, along with somatic practices to heal our relationship to place, this workshop uses one particular archaeological site as a starting point for how to deepen and broaden our connection to place.   We then move on to our somatic experience of the workshop location in order to build tools and skills aimed at connecting to any land we want to have a deeper relationship with.
  • Tending the Inner Landscape –
    • Our bodies are the earth writ small.  Applying permaculture principles to the creation of physical, spiritual and mental health and daily lifestyle practices.  The creation of lasting change in our bodies is facilitated by the choices we make every day.  How do we cultivate the conditions required to keep our bodies healthy as we navigate the complexities of modern life?  Soil, systems, flow, elements, longevity, diversity, stability, resiliency -all these can apply to the inner landscape and the outer.

Extended Classes (length TBD):

  • Elements Cooking School
    • This course is designed to teach the Elements of eating well at home without having to spend all your time in the kitchen or all your money at the grocery store.  The focus will be on batch style cooking so you can make enough food on a Sunday afternoon to nourish yourself through the week.  Condiments, Main Dishes, Side Dishes, Dressings and Dips in the Nourishing Traditions/whole food style of preparation.  We will also look at some shopping strategies that will save you money on high quality foods.
